Who do you teach?

I work with kids picking up a racquet for the first time, teens getting ready for school tryouts, adults learning from scratch, players coming back after years away, and competitive players who want to win more matches. Every lesson is built around the player in front of me, so you never have to work out where you fit before you get in touch.

Do I need any experience before my first lesson?

None at all, and plenty of my first lessons are with complete beginners. We start with how to hold the racquet, where the ball should meet it, and how to move your feet so you arrive on time — those three things decide whether tennis feels frustrating or fun. Most new players are rallying short balls back and forth before the first hour is over. If you are worried you have no coordination, that is normal and it has never been a problem on my court.

What should I bring to a tennis lesson?

Court shoes with non-marking soles, comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in, plenty of water, and a hat or sunglasses for Central Texas afternoons. Bring a racquet if you own one, even an old one — I will tell you honestly whether it is holding you back. If you do not have a racquet yet, mention it when you send your request and I will bring one for you so you do not spend money before you know you enjoy the game. Practice balls are always on me.

What is a good age to start playing tennis?

Most kids can start around five or six using shorter racquets and low-compression balls that bounce slower and stay in the strike zone, which makes early success much more likely. Between eight and twelve is a great window for building clean technique, because habits form quickly and correct easily. There is no upper limit — I have taught adults who started in their fifties, sixties, and seventies, and tennis stays one of the best lifelong sports for balance, footwork, and staying social.

Are lessons a good fit for children?

Yes. With younger kids I keep things patient and upbeat and work on coordination, balance, and simple repeatable technique instead of drilling them into boredom. We use age-appropriate equipment and short-court games so they succeed early and want to come back. We start by hitting so I can see what still works, then rebuild the two or three things that will make the biggest difference before adding anything new.

Most lessons run about an hour, which gives us time for a proper warm-up, focused work on one or two priorities, and live rallying to make it stick. Thirty minutes works well for younger juniors or for a short mid-week tune-up. Ninety minutes suits competitive players who want match-play scenarios in the same session. Are lessons one-on-one or in a group?

One-on-one by default, so the whole hour belongs to your game instead of a queue behind other players. I can usually arrange a semi-private session for two — a parent and child, a couple, or two friends at a similar level — which is a good way to share the cost. I deliberately do not run large clinics, because crowded classes are exactly where beginners get lost and progress stalls.

What does a first lesson look like?

We start with a short conversation about your goals, your history with the game, and anything physical I should work around. Then an easy warm-up and some hitting so I can see where your game actually is. Once a week is the reliable rhythm for steady progress, especially early on while technique is being built. Every other week works well if you are hitting or playing socially in between. Competitive players often want two sessions a week in season. Consistency matters far more than volume — a weekly hour over three months beats an intense burst followed by a long gap every time.

Can I take a lesson with my child or partner?

Yes, I can usually arrange a semi-private lesson for two, and families often find it the most enjoyable way to learn. It works best when both players are at a broadly similar level, or when shared court time matters more than maximum individual improvement. Add the names, ages, and rough experience levels in the notes on the request form and I will plan drills that keep both players engaged.

Do you coach match strategy, not just technique?

Yes. For intermediate and competitive players a lot of the work is tactical: serve placement and the patterns that follow it, first-strike play, knowing when to defend and reset instead of forcing a winner, and building points around your strengths and your opponent's weaknesses. Plenty of players who lose matches are not losing on technique — they are losing on shot selection under pressure, and that is very trainable.

Use the request form on this site. It takes under a minute and asks for your name, phone number, a day and time that would suit you, and anything you would like me to know. There is no account to create, no card to enter, and no deposit. I read every request myself and get back to you to confirm the time and share the court location.

Do I need to create an account to book?

You never need an account to request a lesson. Accounts are optional for returning players who want to view their schedule and lesson history, and you can create one at any point after your first booking.

How quickly will I hear back after I send a request?

Accepted Answer

I will get back to you as soon as I can to confirm the details. I will use the phone number you gave me — usually a text first, or a call if that is easier for you. If your preferred time is already taken, I will offer you the closest alternatives rather than leaving you waiting.

How do I reschedule or cancel a lesson?

Just let me know as early as you reasonably can by phone, text, or the contact form, or send a reschedule request from your account if you have one. Plans change and I understand that; all I ask is as much notice as you can give so I can offer the court time to someone else. I will move the lesson to the next slot that works for both of us at no penalty.

What happens if it rains or the weather turns?

If rain, lightning, or dangerous heat gets in the way, I reschedule the lesson at no cost — you are never charged for a session the weather cancelled. I keep an eye on conditions and contact you before the lesson time rather than letting you drive to the court and guess. In the summer, early morning and evening slots are usually the smarter booking, and I will suggest them when heat is the issue.

How do I pay for a lesson?

You pay me directly at the lesson. Venmo, Zelle, cash, and check all work — whichever is easiest for you. Nothing is charged when you send a request, there is no card on file, and there is no subscription quietly renewing in the background. You pay for the lessons you actually take.
